One of my favourite documentaries is Bill Cunningham New York.
Bill Cunningham is a fashion photographer, who has been documenting New Yorkers street style since the 60’s. Like he says, he uses his camera like a pen. Photographing ordinary people dressed in extraordinary ways.What I love about his work, is the kindness. It’s about celebrating people and their originality, and not about judging them. As someone in the documentary say’s, “he has a point of view”.
The documentary is a brilliant insight into his creative and personal life. Bill Cunningham is a fascinating person, someone I’d love to meet. He lives such a minimal lifestyle and his philosophy on money is explains why he’s been able to do work that he loves.
“If you don’t take money they cant tell you what to do, kid… They don’t own me… Money’s the cheapest thing, liberty and freedom is the most expensive”
Here are some great quotes from the film;
“Its not what i think, its what i see”
“A lot of people have taste but they don’t have the daring to be creative”
” There are no shortcuts, believe me”
